An intrusion at the Battle of Sabine Pass

Richard W. Dowling, a shirtless saloon owner, was the victorious commander in the Battle of Sabine Pass in the American Civil War.

My buddy Jacob and I had just spent a week boating down the Sabine River, from Toledo Bend to the Gulf of Mexico, and we were tired and grimy and waiting for Jacob’s father Henry to come pick us up. We had arranged to meet him at the Sabine Pass Battleground State Historic Park in Sabine Pass, Texas. The memorial site was grassy and desolate, and we were the only people there. A cool breeze was blowing in from the ocean. Jacob went off to find a public restroom, and I was sitting at a picnic table, minding my own business, when a fellow in a convertible coupe began to circle through the parking lot.

The guy who hopped out of the car was fortyish and not wearing a shirt. In fact, he was not wearing much of anything — only shorts, sandals, and wrap-around sunglasses. A ponytail. A bronze tan. I was careful to avoid eye contact, but it didn’t deter him. He walked right over and started asking questions about the battle of Sabine Pass.

I answered, curtly, that a small band of Confederate soldiers had fought off a larger fleet of invading Union ships at this spot, which was now a state historic site.

“Those damn Yankees,” he said. “I say that in jest because I’m from the Northeast. So this was like a crucial port for the South during the war?”

“I have no idea,” I replied. “We just got here. But if you’ll walk around, there’s bound to be some reading material somewhere. At least a marker or something.”

He didn’t take the hint. “So where were you coming from?” he asked.

When I told him about our trip down the Sabine, he announced that he had once ridden a jet ski 180 miles along the Atlantic coast. Now his watercraft was in storage in his garage back home, needing repairs. “You know what they say,” he said. “You either have a new jet ski or you don’t have a jet ski.” He was from New Jersey, and he had taken off work for a few weeks to see the Gulf Coast between New Orleans and Brownsville. As for rivers, he added, “I’d love to explore the Hudson, because it’s so beautiful.”

“On a jet ski?” I asked.

“Oh yeah.”

Then he wanted to know what year the battle of Sabine Pass had been fought. I told him I really, truly had no idea.

“I’ll find out,” he said.

As he walked away, I thought about Jeff back up the river. Then I thought about the Tidwells and the rest of the people I had met along the Sabine. It hadn’t mattered that I was a stranger. They had invited me into their homes, fed me and treated me like one of their own. I realized that I wasn’t like these river people at all. I wasn’t as kind.

Jacob showed up with chips and sandwiches. We were eating at the picnic table when a voice shouted: “1863!”

I turned around. It was the shirtless guy. “What?” I asked him.

“1863,” he said. “That’s the year of the battle.”

“Oh, OK,” I replied.

He stood there beside our picnic table.

“Pringles, huh?” he said.

“Yep.”

“Nice.”

When we didn’t say anything more to the man he walked over to the piers, then circled back to his convertible coupe and sped off to his next destination. One hopes he found a place where the people were friendlier.

  1. Aw, this was an extremely nice post. Taking the time and actual effort to generate a really good article… but what can I say… I put things off a lot and never seem to get anything done.

  2. I blog quite often and I truly appreciate your information. The article has truly peaked my interest. I’m going to bookmark your website and keep checking for new details about once per week. I subscribed to your Feed too.

  3. Together with every little thing which seems to be building throughout this specific area, a significant percentage of opinions are generally very refreshing. Nevertheless, I beg your pardon, because I do not subscribe to your whole theory, all be it exciting none the less. It looks to us that your comments are generally not entirely rationalized and in reality you are your self not completely certain of the assertion. In any event I did appreciate looking at it.

  4. I have noticed that over the course of constructing a relationship with real estate owners, you’ll be able to get them to understand that, in every real estate purchase, a commission rate is paid. Ultimately, FSBO sellers don’t “save” the percentage. Rather, they fight to win the commission through doing a good agent’s work. In this, they shell out their money and also time to conduct, as best they might, the assignments of an broker. Those responsibilities include exposing the home by means of marketing, representing the home to buyers, building a sense of buyer emergency in order to make prompt an offer, organizing home inspections, dealing with qualification investigations with the loan provider, supervising maintenance tasks, and facilitating the closing.

  5. One other thing I would like to say is that rather than trying to accommodate all your online degree programs on times that you finish off work (as most people are tired when they get back), try to have most of your classes on the week-ends and only a couple of courses in weekdays, even if it means a little time off your end of the week. This is beneficial because on the saturdays and sundays, you will be more rested in addition to concentrated for school work. Thanks alot : ) for the different ideas I have figured out from your weblog.

  6. My spouse and I absolutely love your blog and find almost all of your post’s to be precisely what I’m looking for. Do you offer guest writers to write content for you? I wouldn’t mind writing a post or elaborating on a number of the subjects you write about here. Again, awesome website!

  9. Thanks for your write-up on this blog. From my own personal experience, there are occassions when softening way up a photograph might provide the professional photographer with a little bit of an imaginative flare. Oftentimes however, the soft blur isn’t what exactly you had as the primary goal and can sometimes spoil a normally good picture, especially if you thinking about enlarging this.

  13. I have learned some new things from the blog post. One more thing to I have seen is that usually, FSBO sellers will probably reject a person. Remember, they can prefer to never use your solutions. But if anyone maintain a comfortable, professional connection, offering aid and being in contact for around four to five weeks, you will usually be able to win a discussion. From there, a house listing follows. Thanks

  14. Thanks for your post. I also feel that laptop computers are becoming more and more popular lately, and now are sometimes the only kind of computer included in a household. The reason is that at the same time that they are becoming more and more economical, their working power is growing to the point where there’re as strong as desktop from just a few years ago.

Nonetheless, they do not often realize that there are other benefits for you to losing weight also. Doctors claim that fat people come across a variety of illnesses that can be instantly attributed to the excess weight. The great news is that people who are overweight along with suffering from different diseases are able to reduce the severity of the illnesses by means of losing weight. You possibly can see a constant but noticeable improvement with health if even a slight amount of fat reduction is attained.

Something also important I would like to mention is that weight loss is not about going on a dietary fads and trying to get rid of as much weight as you can in a set period of time. You may be aware and be following a few of these tips, yet reinforcing knowledge never affects.

  22. Thanks for giving your ideas. I might also like to mention that video games have been ever evolving. Modern technology and revolutions have helped create sensible and enjoyable games. These entertainment video games were not as sensible when the concept was being experimented with. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something you can fix if you weren’t too busy seeking attention.

  26. One thing I have actually noticed is always that there are plenty of common myths regarding the banks intentions if talking about property foreclosure. One fable in particular is always that the bank wants your house. The bank wants your hard earned cash, not your property. They want the cash they gave you having interest. Steering clear of the bank will draw a new foreclosed realization. Thanks for your posting.
