Hand-pulled ferries across the Sabine and Rio Grande

Los Ebanos Ferry

At certain places on the Sabine River, I try to keep an eye out for evidence of the ferries that once allowed people (and wagons and livestock) to cross the river before bridges became an option.

If the water in the Sabine wasn’t so brown and murky, you could probably locate some of the old ferries decaying on the riverbed, where they sank after being abandoned in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. I heard about them from my friend and collaborator Jacob Botter, whose ancestors operated a ferry at the end of what is now Waldons Ferry Road, a dirt trail in rural Harrison County. His great-great-great-great-grandpa (give or take a great or two) ran a rope from one side of the river to the other and used the rope to pull himself across whenever a paying customer wanted passage.

I’m not sure when that ferry ceased to exist, but Gaines Ferry, the last ferry on the Sabine River, operated until 1937. It transported travelers along the old Camino Real, where Texas Highway 21 meets Louisiana Highway 6. The ferry was replaced by a bridge, which was inundated by the creation of Toledo Bend Reservoir a little more than half a century ago.

I was reminded of the Sabine River ferries when my friend Sean Kimmons shared photos from his recent crossing of the Rio Grande. Sean and his parents loaded their car onto a ferry in Los Ebanos, Texas, and were pulled across the river by a team of men tugging a rope stretched from one bank to the other.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the Los Ebanos Ferry is the only remaining hand-pulled ferry on the Texas-Mexico border.

The Los Ebanos Ferry is a popular tourist attraction since it is the only remaining hand-pulled ferry on the U.S.-Mexico border. It can accommodate only three cars and 12 pedestrians at one time.

The crossing is also known locally as Los Ebanos-San Miguel Camargo, Ferry Gustavo Díaz Ordaz and Ferry Díaz Ordaz-Los Ebanos.

Although the crossing has been in operation since the 1950s, the current ferry has been operating since 1979. It was recognized with a state historical marker in 1975.

And here’s a photo of a Sabine River ferry taken in 1916.

  9. I’d personally also like to mention that most people that find themselves with out health insurance can be students, self-employed and people who are laid-off. More than half with the uninsured are under the age of Thirty five. They do not feel they are wanting health insurance because they’re young plus healthy. Their own income is normally spent on property, food, in addition to entertainment. Most people that do work either complete or as a hobby are not made available insurance through their work so they move without due to rising price of health insurance in america. Thanks for the strategies you talk about through this website.

  17. I have seen lots of useful factors on your internet site about computer systems. However, I have the viewpoint that notebooks are still not nearly powerful sufficiently to be a wise decision if you generally do jobs that require lots of power, for example video editing. But for world-wide-web surfing, statement processing, and majority of other common computer functions they are just fine, provided you may not mind the screen size. Many thanks for sharing your thinking.

  18. Thanks for the new things you have discovered in your short article. One thing I’d prefer to comment on is that FSBO relationships are built eventually. By releasing yourself to the owners the first few days their FSBO can be announced, prior to a masses start off calling on Friday, you develop a good association. By sending them equipment, educational products, free reviews, and forms, you become a good ally. If you take a personal fascination with them as well as their situation, you build a solid connection that, oftentimes, pays off if the owners opt with a representative they know as well as trust — preferably you actually.

  19. Thanks for the recommendations shared on the blog. Another thing I would like to mention is that fat reduction is not information about going on a celebrity diet and trying to lose as much weight as you’re able in a couple of weeks. The most effective way in losing weight is by acquiring it slowly and right after some basic suggestions which can enable you to make the most from a attempt to slim down. You may learn and already be following most of these tips, although reinforcing expertise never hurts.

  20. I’m impressed, I must say. Seldom do I come across a blog that’s equally educative and interesting, and without a doubt, you’ve hit the nail on the head. The problem is an issue that not enough men and women are speaking intelligently about. I’m very happy I stumbled across this in my hunt for something regarding this.

My website has a lot of exclusive content I’ve either created myself or outsourced but it looks like a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my permission. Do you know any techniques to help reduce content from being ripped off? I’d truly appreciate it.

  25. Thanks for enabling me to attain new concepts about pcs. I also hold the belief that certain of the best ways to keep your laptop in leading condition is by using a hard plastic-type material case, and also shell, which fits over the top of the computer. These kinds of protective gear are usually model targeted since they are made to fit perfectly on the natural outer shell. You can buy all of them directly from owner, or from third party sources if they are available for your mobile computer, however don’t assume all laptop will have a covering on the market. Again, thanks for your guidelines.
